STATEMENT ON WALES MATTERS

The Future of Wales: A Critical Assessment

Wales is at a crossroads, yet its path towards sustainable, inclusive development is marred by inadequate ambition and persistent policy failures. Economic disparity remains entrenched, with rural and post-industrial regions suffering from chronic unemployment and neglect. Rather than leading with decisive action, the Welsh Government has fallen short, choosing rhetoric over meaningful change.

Child poverty is rampant, affecting more than a third of Welsh children and devastating their prospects for education, health, and social mobility. The Children's Commissioner has condemned the government for its lack of clear targets and ambition, exposing flagship initiatives like universal free school meals as token gestures—woefully insufficient without substantial, measurable reforms.

Mental health services for children are in disarray, crippled by poor coordination and excessive delays. Families find themselves trapped in a bureaucratic maze, denied timely help, with no coherent support structure in sight.

Wales' education system is in freefall, with 2022 PISA scores plummeting to their lowest levels on record. Disadvantaged children fare far worse than their English counterparts, not because of poverty, but due to systemic failures: a curriculum devoid of essential knowledge, outdated teaching methods, and a glaring lack of accountability.

The vision of a greener, fairer, and stronger Wales rings hollow unless leaders abandon half-measures and confront these urgent crises head-on.
