As of late 2024, immigration overtook the economy as the top issue for British voters...but why?
Many Britons feel that high levels of immigration place pressure on housing, schools, and the NHS. While migrants often contribute economically, the perception persists that local services are overstretched, especially in areas with rapid demographic change.

Although migrants fill vital roles in healthcare and other sectors, some Britons worry about job competition and wage suppression, particularly in low-skilled industries. This concern is more pronounced among older voters and those with fewer educational qualifications.
The rise in small boat crossings across the Channel has intensified public unease. The image of asylum seekers arriving without documentation has been framed by some political figures as a threat to national security and public order. This rhetoric resonates with voters who feel the system lacks control or fairness.
And let us be honest not knowing the reasons for their travel across the channel could be not just economical, but could be in the future more dangerous.
Public frustration is often directed not at migrants themselves, but at perceived government failure to manage immigration effectively. The lack of transparency, inconsistent enforcement, and politicisation of asylum policy have eroded trust.
