The Welsh Political Scene

Welsh politics operates within a complex multi-layered system that balances national identity with integration into the broader British political framework. Since devolution in 1999, Wales has developed its own democratic institutions while remaining part of the United Kingdom, creating a unique political landscape characterized by both cooperation and tension with Westminster. The current political environment in Wales is experiencing unprecedented change, with traditional Labour dominance facing serious challenges from nationalist and populist movements, while constitutional questions about Wales' future relationship with the UK continue to evolve.

Historical Context and Development

Welsh devolution represents one of the most significant constitutional changes in modern British history. Unlike Scotland, which had a stronger tradition of separate institutions, Wales had been more fully integrated into the English legal and administrative system since the Acts of Union in 1536 and 1543.

The journey to devolution began with growing Welsh nationalism in the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in the failed 1979 referendum where only 20% voted in favor of a Welsh Assembly. However, the 1997 referendum, held under Tony Blair's Labour government, narrowly approved devolution with 50.3% support

A POEM ABOUT THE SENEDD

Visions in Glass (The Senedd)

Behind glass walls, the Senedd looms proud, Promising visions honest and bright— Each pane claims it welcomes the crowd, But bitter shadows cloud the light. Sun streams through the heartless hall, debates ring, but fury grows, Openness shattered for us all as broken promises stoke our woes. The chamber’s glass invites unrest, to ideals battered by neglect, For scrutiny brings forth protest— closed doors, secret plots unchecked. In glass we demanded truth revealed, the people’s voice loud and strong, But fear and silence tightly sealed—each pane reflects what’s deeply wrong. Transparent walls that claim our trust can shatter with a furious shout, And in their breaking, burning dust, the stories scream: we are shut out. Yet every shard of broken trust, holds hope for voices wild and raw, In lessons forged by rage and loss, the Welsh may find peace past the roar. So, stare through glass with burning eyes, see visions tremble in the glare— For every promise that’s denied, unmasks the depths of our despair.

Whilst UK companies were looking toward the idea of BEST PRACTICE which looking at what was best to copy...he decided declaring CLEAR RED WATER which meant Wales would be different! Not better just different and it made Wales poorer!

MARK DRAKEFORD

Mark Drakeford -Former Probation Officer who sentenced Wales to Communal Servitude! Ruined the Wales NHS and went on to become First Minister and Wales' woes deepened!

The Architect of the Nation of Sanctuary  that was not really about any kind of benefice, but was about knowing that doing this was a ruse to getting votes...Labour we losing votes and saw this as an opportunity.

Labour won the last Senedd election on the lie that he saved Wales...the truth was the opposite!
